Flow Labs Establishes Agreement with Michelin Mobility Intelligence to Deliver Unparalleled Traffic Safety Data to Agencies

The new agreement will broaden Flow Labs’ safety data capabilities to deliver one of the most powerful Vision Zero tools available to agencies, accurately identifying dangerous safety hotspots, diagnosing their root causes, and measuring the overall impact of safety initiatives.

OAKLAND, California, May 30, 2024 – Flow Labs, a transportation software technology leader specializing in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that makes roads cleaner, clearer, and safer, today announced it has established a traffic safety data agreement with Michelin Mobility Intelligence, a global leader in mobility data services and solutions. For agencies, the new agreement represents a major step forward in the reliability, precision, and security of traffic safety data, giving them top-tier operational insights to support Vision Zero safety initiatives nationwide.

Flow Labs’ digital twin platform uses AI to enrich and integrate multiple data streams – including signal data, detection data, and connected vehicle data from a range of partners – into a comprehensive traffic management platform that optimizes traffic flow, traffic safety, and environmental emissions while enhancing overall regional mobility.

With the inclusion of Michelin Mobility Intelligence’s Safer Roads data products, the Flow Labs’ platform will have a broader capability to identify and provide decision support wherever there is excessive speeding, near misses, hard acceleration and braking, and improper phone handling, both historically and in real-time. The data can also help agencies understand if weather or bright sunlight played a role in any of the captured events.

“Safety is a major concern for every agency we talk to, and working with a partner with global automotive experience like Michelin Mobility Intelligence puts us at the forefront of helping DOTs improve road safety in a scalable and affordable way,” said Flow Labs’ CEO and Founder Jatish Patel. “These datasets can enable engineering teams to pinpoint safety issues across entire transportation networks, and also accurately measure the impact of safety decisions, policies or physical modifications to the roadway.”

Flow Labs has been leading the transportation industry in using data for safety prediction and prevention for the last several years. Data shows that 90% of crashes are a direct result of risk-taking driver behavior, and by using Connected Vehicle (CV) data and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Flow Labs platform can quickly and accurately discover where the key indicators of crashes exist across an entire traffic network. By combining these behavioral insights with roadway volumes and reported crash data, engineering teams can proactively visualize safety risks, diagnose safety issues, help agencies deploy safety projects, and measure project impacts.

The Flow Labs platform integrates CV data from multiple sources, both historically and in real-time. This capability enables the system to collect data on an array of other critical driving behaviors, such as red-light running and dilemma zone entry. Additionally, the system integrates Locations Based Services (LBS) and Pedestrian Push Button data to identify pedestrian safety risks and conflicts with vehicle movements, making Flow Labs one of the most comprehensive traffic safety solutions available to agencies.

“Crashes are devastating events and the traditional methods of using only crash and fatality data to evaluate road safety just aren’t good enough,” said Patel. “By working with groups like Michelin Mobility Intelligence, we now have the tools to anticipate crashes and take steps to prevent them. It’s time to fully embrace Vision Zero and revolutionize the way we measure and improve road safety so that we can save lives.”
